This comprehensive guide covers the preparation, operation, and maintenance of copper electroplating systems. It encompasses Alkaline Copper Strikes, Matte Acid Copper, and Bright Acid Copper, along with essential guidance on anodes, chemical components (such as copper sulfate pentahydrate and sodium bisulfate), and wiring setup.

Copper Plating Technical Guide & Operating Instructions
Welcome to the technical support page for JODECRAFT copper plating solutions. Whether you are using our Alkaline Copper Strike, standard Acid Copper, or Bright Acid Copper systems, proper preparation and parameter control are essential for achieving a high-quality, adherent, and visually striking finish.
Below you will find detailed operating parameters, step-by-step plating procedures, and troubleshooting guidance for each of our copper formulations.
1. Alkaline Copper Strike Solution
Our non-cyanide alkaline copper strike is specifically formulated to provide exceptional adhesion on difficult-to-plate substrate metals such as zinc die-cast, steel, iron, and lead-tin alloys. It prevents immersion deposition (displacement plating) which can ruin adhesion before subsequent plating steps.
Operating Parameters
- Bath Temperature: 40°C to 55°C
- pH Range: 9.5 to 10.5
- Cathode Current Density: 1.0 to 3.0 A/dm² (Amperes per square decimetre)
- Anodes: Pure copper or stainless steel (grade 316)
- Agitation: Mild mechanical agitation recommended
- Filtration: Continuous or periodic filtration recommended for best clarity
Step-by-Step Operating Procedure
- Surface Preparation: Thoroughly degrease and clean the substrate parts using an alkaline cleaner, followed by a warm water rinse and an appropriate acid activator dip.
- Immersion: Submerge the parts into the alkaline copper strike bath while live (hot entering) or immediately upon entry at a moderate current density for 2 to 5 minutes.
- Rinse: Remove the components and rinse thoroughly in drag-out recovery rinse tanks followed by clean running water.
- Next Step: Transfer the parts immediately into your acid copper bath, bright nickel bath, or other final finishing lines. Do not allow parts to dry between stages.
2. Standard Acid Copper Plating Solution
Our standard acid copper solution is designed for engineering, electroforming, and heavy build-up applications where excellent leveling, ductility, and high deposition rates are prioritized over bright leveling finishes.
Operating Parameters
- Bath Temperature: 20°C to 30°C
- pH Range: Less than 1.0 (strongly acidic)
- Cathode Current Density: 2.0 to 5.0 A/dm²
- Anodes: Oxygen-free high-conductivity (OFHC) phosphorized copper anodes enclosed in titanium anode baskets with polypropylene filter bags
- Agitation: Vigorous air agitation or mechanical cathode rod movement is essential
- Filtration: Continuous filtration through a 5-micron or 1-micron filter cartridge
Step-by-Step Operating Procedure
- Pre-Treatment: Ensure the substrate is properly struck with an alkaline copper or nickel layer if plating over reactive metals like steel or zinc.
- Loading: Suspend parts securely on titanium or copper plating wire/jigs. Lower parts into the bath under current to prevent chemical etching.
- Plating Duration: Adjust current density based on surface area. A typical deposition rate yields roughly 25 microns of copper thickness in 45 to 60 minutes at 3.0 A/dm².
- Post-Plating Rinse: Rinse thoroughly in a stagnant drag-out rinse followed by clean running water to reclaim copper salts and prevent staining.
3. Bright Acid Copper Plating Solution
Our bright acid copper solution incorporates specialized organic brighteners, carriers, and levelers to produce mirror-bright, highly reflective copper deposits with exceptional throwing power and leveling characteristics over polished substrates.
Operating Parameters
- Bath Temperature: 20°C to 28°C (strict temperature control prevents brightener breakdown and cloudiness)
- pH Range: Less than 1.0
- Cathode Current Density: 1.5 to 4.0 A/dm²
- Anodes: Phosphorized copper anodes in titanium baskets with filter bags
- Agitation: Continuous, uniform air agitation is required to maintain brightener suspension and prevent burning in high-current areas
- Filtration: Continuous carbon and particle filtration
Step-by-Step Operating Procedure
- Preparation: Clean, activate, and apply a copper strike or nickel underplate as required. Rinse thoroughly.
- Current Application: Immerse parts into the bright acid copper bath under a live cathodic current.
- Plating Run: Maintain recommended current density and ensure temperature stays within the specified window. Add maintenance brighteners periodically based on Ampere-hour usage.
- Final Rinse: Rinse thoroughly in cold running water, followed by a passivating or anti-tarnish dip if the parts are to be stored before subsequent top-coating or precious metal plating.
General Troubleshooting Guide
- Rough or Nodular Deposits: Usually caused by suspended solid particles in the bath, excessive current density, or inadequate filtration. Check filter systems and reduce current density.
- Dark, Burnt, or Powdery Edges: Caused by localized high current density or insufficient solution agitation. Increase agitation or lower the overall rectifier voltage/current.
- Cloudy or Hazy Bright Finish: Often caused by bath temperature being too low, organic contamination, or brightener imbalance. Verify water temperature and perform carbon treatment if organic breakdown is suspected.
- Poor Adhesion / Blistering: Indicates inadequate pre-cleaning, improper activation, or lack of an alkaline strike layer over reactive metals like steel or zinc. Revisit pre-treatment cleaning steps.
